Jazz, Genius, and Jail - Adventures of Anita O'Day 1910-1969

617 pgs.
Emily Productions, Publ.

The story of Anita O'Day really starts with Gene Krupa who influenced Anita and her drummer, John Poole. Anita tells funny stories of traveling with Krupa's band during WWII, the 3,000,000 hit "Let Me Off Uptown, for which she was paid $7.00; her short career as a bootlegger during the war while married to her golf pro husband Carl Hoff; touring with Stan Kenton's orchestra on a railroad car; and the Newport Jazz Festival which led to a tour of Europe with Benny Goodman, among other stories.
