Barney Kessel worked for forty years in Hollywood as an arranger and freelance musician for radio, films and television performing with such diverse talent as Lawrence Welk, the Beach Boys, Barbara Streisand, Liberace, Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra. He made more than four hundred recordings, both solo and with such jazz artists as Charlie Parker, Billie Holiday, Oscar Peterson, Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, Ben Webster and Sonny Rollins. In the 1940s he performed with the renowned Artie Shaw, Charlie Barnet and Benny Goodman bands. Known for his brilliant harmonic improvisation, his fluid beat and hard-driving earthy style, critics called Barney one of the 'swingingest' players in jazz.

This book by Maurice J. Summerfield is a combination biography, and detailed chronology of performances, with copious photographs.
