Charlie Parker - and Thematic Improvisation

Author Henry Martin explores the broader implications of Charlie Parker as connecting melodic formulas together in creative ways to fashion his solos, by touching on the nature of improvisation itself, and confronting the issue of Parker's quotation from other material. This is a serious and "technical" study whereby Martin allows Parker's well made music with such concentrated and integrated techniques to suggest a hybrid voice-leading/motivic strategy for its analysis, comparing the basic linear design of Parker's improvised melodies with those of the thematic material he used.
